1st Sgt. Frank Casagrand's
close run in with the enemy
During the German counter attack on the causeway a battle took place in a field to the left of the Ingouf farm known as the cabbage patch. It was here that the 1st Battalion of the 502 was ordered to setup in a defensive position. During this action a peculiar incident happened to 1st Sergeant Frank Casagrand of C company.
During a German attack in which Sgt Casagrand's postion was overrun, he was wounded in action and thought to be killed. Frank was laying on the ground pretending to be dead when in fact he was only shot in the arm. The Germans saw Casagrand's body on the ground and never checked him. They were more interested in his weapon an M1carbine. They grabbed his weapon, unloaded the clip and tossed it away. Then the two German machine gunners sat on Casagrand and fired their MG42 at the US Paratroopers until a counterattack drove the Germans back. As the Germans retreated Frank grabbed his carbine and fired the remaining bullet left in the chamber killing one of the Germans.
